Perception
Many people think of CEOs as having ultimate authority, standing at the top of a traditional organizational chart, free to hire and fire, to open or close facilities, responsible to no one.
Reality
Bay Park Associates understands that CEOs are positioned between the pyramid of that traditional chart and a similar, though inverted, chart above them. They must balance their authority within the organization with their accountability beyond it: to their boards, customers, suppliers, communities, employees, and to the legacies of their institutions.
CEOs are much like everyone else yet with broader responsibilities. They too are subject to unrealistic expectations, to the effects of situations in their personal lives, to finding ways to resolve “unanticipated opportunities,” yet also having to make decisions that effect tens, hundreds, or thousands of lives.
As one CEO expressed: “My CFO has untreatable cancer. He and I are working together to find his successor while he still can. We’re learning how to work with a new marketing company. We may have to close one of our sites. And my 16-year-old daughter is lobbying for a Mustang.”
